‘It’s the economy, stupid’ was the central mantra of Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign and, for the last 40 years, economic growth has been a central priority of governments across the world.
However, ever since excessive deregulation and risk-taking led to the 2008 financial crisis and the worst global recession since the Great Depression, and with a broader range of issues, from climate change to immigration, now mattering most to voters, we must ask ourselves whether we should prioritise economic growth or whether other objectives are more important?
