The Cambridge Union
The Cambridge Union is pleased to announce the launch of The Order of Time, a profound sculpture exhibition by emerging young artist Samuel Selwyn-Bazeley. Drawing inspiration from physicist Carlo Rovelli’s 2017 book of the same title, this inaugural show presents an entirely new body of work that Selwyn-Bazeley developed during his time at the Union. Through his masterful artworks, Selwyn-Bazeley reflects on over two centuries of dialogue, debate, and discovery within the Union, inviting viewers to journey through time and engage in the rich tradition of intellectual exchange that has defined this iconic institution.
Samuel Selwyn-Bazeley is a multifaceted artist known for his focus on social practice, creating projects that celebrate play, inclusion, and education. His background, shaped by his early years in Fiji and his parents’ work in poverty alleviation for the Foreign Office, deeply informs his work, which often explores socio-political themes. His exhibition, The Order of Time, reflects his artistic influences, featuring his private collection of natural specimens, family photographs, and drawings, which also hint at his family lineage as the descendants of Selwyn College’s founder, George Augustus Selwyn.
Selwyn-Bazeley received training from some of the world’s most renowned institutions, including the University of Cambridge, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Design Academy Eindhoven, the University of Edinburgh, and Central St Martins. His projects engage architectural spaces and are known for their epic scale and dramatic flair, with clients ranging from Christie’s to Claridge’s, as well as various art foundations, fairs, and sculpture parks. He is also accomplished in executing significant international sculpture commissions for art collectors, bringing his distinct style and vision to major projects.
