A “Waterhouse Classic”
In the 1860s, the Society had sufficient funds to design their own building and employed the famous architect Sir Alfred Waterhouse, who would later design The Natural History Museum in London. Sir Alfred designed The Debating Chamber with a clubhouse surrounding it, to provide members with not only a large meeting hall but a range of additional facilities, such as an extensive library, games rooms, meeting rooms and dining facilities.
