Maintaining Freedom of Speech has never been as relevant as it is in the modern world…
The Cambridge Union Society – An Educational Charity
The Cambridge Union works in 18 countries around the world and within the UK to support freedom of speech and develop the skill of oratory through debating. Our outreach programme to schools offers free support, advice, and entry into debating competitions for young people.

Where our Money Goes
Our members pay fees which support all their activities and social events. We do not pay participants or speakers at the Union, all of whom give their time freely. We have to raise money through our charity to:
- Maintain our Grade II listed building which is used free of charge to support educational activities as part of our outreach programme.
- Provide opportunities for funded places for qualifying schools and young people to attend competitions and debating activities.
- Send students to support schools and competitions both in the UK and internationally.
- Provide educational bursaries for students of reduced means to participate in the Society’s programmes.
How to Give
There are three main ways to support the Cambridge Union in its ongoing work:
- Donate. Either a one-off amount or a regular gift. Click the button below to head to our donation portal and learn more.
- Sponsorship. We welcome sponsorship from businesses and groups who will gain international recognition for their support. There are a wide range of opportunities to sponsor the Cambridge Union. If you would like to discuss sponsorship please email bursar@cus.org
- Legacies and Commemorative Giving . Remembering us in your will allows the Charity to continue to defend free speech into the future. Likewise a gift given in someone’s name supports our rich heritage and honours their memory. To find out more information or to discuss particulars please email bursar@cus.org
Giving allows us to further the work of the Union in fostering the skills of oratory, open debate and reasoning. Encouraging young minds to listen, challenge and understand multiple viewpoints. To generate balanced views through logic and testing their ideas in open discussion. We aim to do this with as few barriers as possible.
